International Falafel Day

June 12th is International Falafel Day! Thanks to Ben Lang for creating this tasty food holiday back in 2012! (He also established International Hummus Day, which is celebrated annually on May 13th.)

How am I celebrating? Well, I’ve made my own falafel in the past, but today I decided to try a frozen falafel brand that caught my eye! I recently discovered Afia Foods at HEB (the big grocery store here in Texas), which is a brand specializing in Mediterranean cuisine. Afia makes a variety of frozen falafel and kibbeh, and after seeing a package of their turmeric falafel, I knew I had to try it.

And let me tell ya, I was really happy I did!

I made pita pockets stuffed with Afia’s spicy turmeric falafels. The falafels were nice and crispy on the outside, yet still moist inside. They had a perfect amount of heat—and you know how much I love spice. In the pita pocket, I added in some mixed greens and sliced cucumbers and tomatoes from our CSA. And drizzled everything with homemade tzatziki (with the CSA cucumbers), of course!

This was perfect lunch. So healthy and fresh and delicious. 😋

I’m glad I found Afia Foods at HEB. It’s a quality frozen food brand, AND it’s a local brand based right here in Austin, Texas! Plus, Afia is a family/women/minority-owned small business; and I couldn’t be prouder to support them.

If you don’t have an HEB in your community, I did see that you can purchase select Afia Foods online in bulk. Below are links to the turmeric falafel and traditional kibbeh available on Amazon. (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.)

Sure these come in packs of 10 bags, but remember, you can freeze these and heat them whenever you’re ready! Believe me, I could definitely go through 10 bags of Afia falafel in a week. 😂

I’m also excited to have their traditional falafel, the garlic and herb, and the three cheese very soon! So stay tuned for future posts showing off more flavorful Afia falafels. In the meantime, I hope everyone has a yummy International Falafel Day! ✨🥙✨
